Oh my gosh - I can't believe after planning this vacation back in January, months and months of waiting - the ship has sailed - so to speak. It goes so fast! I managed to dodge not one, not two, but three hurricanes threatening the trip! One on the East Coast for New York, one heading to New Orleans that turned out to be a big storm and one in the Gulf that went a different direction. We had great weather and only one rain downpour when we were at a lagoon - but it was still warm and the rain was welcome! What an amazing 2 1/2 weeks I had! New York, New Orleans (first time!) and a cruise to the Gulf side of Mexico where we hadn't been yet: Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan, Honduras and Belize City, Belize!! Added two new countries to my list, saw Mayan ruins and four fantastic shows with my great friend Nanette in New York: Catch Me If You Can, Sister Act, The Addams Family and Billy Elliott. As I did before, I'll add a vacation write up and a few photo's very soon!!

UPDATED: Hurricane Irene Prompts Cancellation of All Broadway Shows Aug. 27-28; Off-Broadway Also Impacted

Irene was a Broadway hit in the 1920s and the 1970s. She's hitting Broadway again, in the form of Hurricane Irene, shutting down the Great White Way Aug. 27-28, The Broadway League announced Aug. 26. Hurricane Irene is expected to lash New York City with high winds and perhaps as much a 5-10 inches of rain Saturday and Sunday.

Shortly after 4 PM Friday, the Nederlander Organization tweeted the news on Twitter that all Saturday and Sunday Broadway shows would go dark owing to the emergency weather situation. This represents the biggest emergency shutdown of Broadway since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. (A massive blackout in August 2003 closed Broadway for one performance.)

Following the earlier tweet from the Nederlanders, the official closure statement from The Broadway League came at 5:47 PM Friday, citing "the suspension of public transportation by government authorities in preparation of the incoming storm."

Paul Libin, chairman of The Broadway League, stated, "The safety and security of theatregoers and employees is everyone's primary concern."

Some 23 plays and musicals are affected, including the 2011 Tony Award-winning productions of War Horse and The Book of Mormon. Countless Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway shows will also go dark.

On Friday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had ordered a shut-down of New York City mass transit, effective noon Saturday, Aug. 27. A statement from the governor's office read, "The Metropolitan Transit Authority will institute a system-wide shut-down when trains and buses begin their final runs starting at approximately noon on Saturday; the shut-down will include subways, buses, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and Access-A-Ride."

At 3 PM Friday, Disney Theatrical Productions announced that performances of the Broadway productions of Mary Poppins and The Lion King will not be presented on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 27-28. Refund/exchange inquiries should be made at point of purchase The League soon followed suit.

Disney "made the decision in the interest of its patrons' and staff's safety following the announcement of the impending suspension of MTA and Metro North service," according to a statement.

By 3 PM Friday, some Off-Broadway producers were already starting to cancel weekend shows. By 6 PM, it became clear that most of public life in New York City would be halted for the weekend, with residents hunkering down in their homes. The Off-Broadway shows affected include (but are not limited to) Zarkana at Radio City Music Hall, (The Select) Sun Also Rises at New York Theatre Workshop, The Talls at Second Stage Uptown, Million Dollar Quartet at New World Stages and Olive and the Bitter Herbs by Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters. Sunday performances of the New York International Fringe Festival have also been cancelled.

Following the League's Friday announcement of the Broadway shutdown, Theatre Development Fund, which operates three TKTS discount theatre ticket booths in New York City (Lower Manhattan, Times Square and Downtown Brooklyn), announced the weekend shuttering of its kiosks.

The Tony-winning Broadway revival of John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse's Chicago was to become the fourth longest-running production in Broadway history at the Saturday matinee, surpassing the run of A Chorus Line with a total of 6,138 performances. That milestone at the Ambassador Theatre will now be delayed until the Monday, Aug. 29 performance.

According to the Associated Press, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said transit service probably won't be available again until sometime Monday or later. Residents of low-lying areas in New York City are forced by the city to evacuate to higher ground. City licenses for all outdoor events on Sunday have been revoked. The 8.1 million people in New York City are being urged to stay at home with food, family, friends and emergency supplies such as flashlights and bottled water. Forced evacuation of people in flood zones begins Saturday.

It is generally thought, according to industry sources, that Off-Broadway and Broadway shows that play on a Monday schedule will go on as planned, as long as power and public access are sure things.

Hurricane Irene

What a powerful force of nature, and in the last 150 years, this is only the 5th hurricane projected to hit New York City. I pray for everyone's safety and for the safety of the people I know living there, especially Nanette. It is expected to hit mostly the lower part of Manhattan. Irene has shut down Broadway, with all shows canceling Saturday and Sunday shows, talk about historic. On the selfish part, I'm scheduled to be there next Friday, and I'm hoping it this doesn't wreck havoc with my flights, my visit with Nanette, and very selfishly, the show's we're looking forward to seeing.
Let us pray there are not a lot of lives lost and mass destruction.

I'm so excited about my upcoming trip to New York City, just eight days from now! Nanette and I are planning to see three shows, Sister Act, Catch Me If You Can and The Addams Family. Wow! I can't believe I found information on this tour! I saw this tour at the Paramount Theatre, Oakland, CA, Jan 29, 2006. The thing that I remember the most about this concert is Rick ripping his red shirt open during either "It's Alright" or "This is Good".

He sang both songs back-to-back exposing his sexy chest :)
The tour followed the release of what I believe is his best release to date, "Life" and featured more songs from this cd.

This posting is a little late, okay, a lot late! We saw Hugh Jackman perform his new one man show at the Curran Theatre this past May. It was a Friday night, May 13th, lucky Friday the 13th!! My friend who works in the ticketing department put us in the best seats in the house - front row, pit seats, right by the stairs!

When Mr. Jackman first came out he was actually talking to me! Asked me how I was doing and told me tonight is just like Oprah -ask me anything! At one point he sat on the stairs and sings 'Tenterfield Saddler' and the man is like 2 feet from me! I felt like he singing to me. His show was outstanding! Song, dance, and some incredible humor when he emerges in the second level box seats in his "Boy From Oz" character, Peter Allen, and sings I Go To Rio and a few other songs. He was in rare form, prancing around with a pink boa and his shirt half opened and his tight pants. A great view from the front seats! Ha Ha! Another highlight of performance was when he sang 'Over the Rainbow' followed by two guys from Australia coming up the aisles, each playing the didgeridoo. His back up singers were amazing and did a song together while he was transforming into Peter Allen. One of the girls was in 'Rent' on Broadway and the other has played Glinda in 'Wicked'.
I can't remember every song he sang, and some I don't even know the names of, but here's what I can remember:

Sunday, June 24, 2011, John and I attended the Dolly Parton 'Better Day' tour at the Concord Pavilion (now called the Sleep Train Pavilion).

What an incredible experience this turned out to be!
Not only was this what I consider to be Dolly's finest concert (of the three I've seen), but I was also lucky enough to be part of the select few to go backstage and meet Dolly!! I still can't believe it!! I had joined the online membership to get pre-sale tickets so I could purchase better seats,
having no idea that I would have the opportunity to be selected for a meet and greet! Then it came: Sunday morning I received the email that I had
been selected
to meet
Dolly Parton!

After picking up my meet and greet sticker, and after a vodka cran, I made my way to the designated area and I'm in the line with about six other people in front of me to meet Dolly, and some other people behind me. After the token wheelchair kid came out, I knew we'd be going in. It was quick, but still wonderful. We walked to the back of the outside stage area, by her bus and there was a photo spot set up. When it was my turn she looked at me, motioned to come over and said "Well, hellllllllloooooooooooooooooo! Come on over here and give me a hug!" So, I did!! ha ha! She asked me how I was doing and I said "I'm wonderful!! It's such an honor to meet you". Then she said, well, let's get our picture taken. Snap, Snap, picture taken. Then she thanked me for coming, gave me a hug, said she hopes I have a great time and that she appreciates my support and wished me goodbye.

There were several Dolly Drag Queens to be found. I started giving them names:
Down-on-her-Luck Dolly (she looked like she had been hitchiking for a week to get there, had a suitcase and dollar store makeup)
Buffet Dolly - HUGE!!! With a cheap wig just kind of balanced on her head and a sparkly out fit
Wheelchair Dolly - similar to Buffet Dolly, just smaller and in a wheelchair
Saloon Dolly - totally looked like a saloon girl, and had a Dolly Doll dressed just like her
The Dolly Trio - when Dolly sang 9 to 5 these three Dolly's came running from the back seats and danced like maniacs through the aisle!

My 6th Crystal Gayle concert was just as memorable as my 1st! At 60, her voice and performance are as good as ever! What I really enjoy is that she sings some songs that she has not recorded and doesn't present a "greatest hits" package in her live show. Crystal's show are always fresh, fun and do offer a mix of the classic songs we love to hear. Crystal's show included her own classics, songs from the 'American Songbook' and a fun tribute medley of Buck Owens songs with her sister Peggy Sue. She opened with When You're Smiling (The Whole World Smiles at You), as song she has not recorded, continued with 'Love To' (one of my favorite Crystal songs, then 'Those Were The Days', a song I wish she would record! What a fun song that was! Our front row seats offered a perfect view to a fantastic evening!! Peggy Sue sang 'Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind), which she penned for their sister Loretta Lynn, and she also sang 'You're Good Girls Gonna Go Bad', which I've never heard Peggy Sue sing in the past. Crystal and her talented sax player Blu-Jay dueted on 'Memories Are Made of This', and opened the second act singing her classic 'You & I' duet with her keyboard player.
Other songs included: 'Ready for the Times to Get Better', 'Midnight in the Desert', 'Talkin' in Your Sleep', 'Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue', Buck Owens Medley: 'Tiger by the Tail', 'Act Naturally' and 'Crying Time'. Crystals version of 'Crying Time' was amazing, another song I wish she's record! Also in the set were 'You Don't Even Know My Name', 'Skylark', 'Nearness of You', 'That's What I Like About the South' (with Peggy Sue), 'Blue Moon of Kentucky' and 'Coal Miners Daughther', both also with Peggy Sue. The evening drew to a close wit 'Cry', a Gospel Medley: Jesus on the Mainline, I Saw the Light, Somebody Touched Me and I'll Fly Away. Crystal closed out the show with her encore performance of 'When I Dream'. As usual, she greeted, posed for photos and singed autographs after the show. I can't wait for my 7th Crystal Gayle concert!

Me, as Nicolas Noble in 'Where's Cindy, or, The Poor Girl From Peoria'. This show was so much fun to do and I had a great time playing the hero in this Melodra! The lady as the saloon girl is Vicki, sadly, I don't remember her last name, and I don't remember the name of the young woman playing Cindy. This was one of my favorite shows to perform! They're fighting over me here after a fire has destroyed either the orphanage or saloon or half the town. This is somewhere around 1990/1991

I've done a terrible job at blogging! I don't think anyone even reads it, but, I should keep it up as a record for myself if nothing else. Some of the great shows I've seen this year are Megan Hilty, Michael Carbonaro, Emily Bergl and Lynda Carter and Betty Buckley.
I've seen Megan Hilty in Wicked and the pre-Broadway of '9 to 5: The Musical' and her one woman show surely did not disappoint!

Michael Carbonaro put on an an unexpected show of magic and comedy. And look how cute he is, look at those lips ;)

Emily Bergl was a true delight!! I can't wait to see her cabaret act again!!

My second Lynda Carter show, Wicked Cool, delivered, topping the first show I saw. This woman can really entertain!!

Betty Buckley put on a show of classic Broadway tunes, old and new.

Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage

Okay, I admit it, I bought my ticket to Miss Abigail's for three reasons: I wanted to do my "Off Broadway" duty during a trip to New York, Eve Plumb of 'The Brady Bunch' fame was a draw, and, very important, the discounted tickets were cheap. I walked into Sofia's Downstairs Cabaret Theatre, not knowing what type of theatre it was, expecting a regular theatre set up, and was surprised to find our front row seats were only about three inches from the stage, however, I was very excited to be so close to the action - little did I know how close I would be! While Eve Plumb as Miss Abigail is the draw, Manuel Herrera as Paco proves to be the star of the show with his latin charm, engaging personality and good looks. Paco greets audience members and does his duty as Miss Abigail's house boy and assistant tidying up the room where the show is set. The show is very audience engaging and Plumb and Herrera both do a great job in connecting with the audience. For me the highlights of the show were when in one scene, Paco is MIA, so Miss Abigail brings me on stage to carry on Paco's duties. After reaching a book Paco would normally get for her, I am sitting on the couch, reading to the audience with Miss Abigail, as a jealous Paco returns to find me in his seat. The ad libbing between myself and Hererra was thrilling, and gave me my 15 minutes of Off-Broadway fame. Both Plumb and Herrera referred to me a few times in the show and Paco shot me with bubbles from a bubble gun as I punched back, popping the bubbles of his jealousy. I very much enjoyed being a part of the show and for a few moments, the acting bug was buzzing around, attempting to bite me once again. For the curious ones out there, Eve Plumb looks fantastic! Miss Abigails' Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage is an evening full of laughs, entertainment and plain fun. I'm not sure when the show is running until, but the website shows tickets on sale until dates in February 2011. If you find yourself in New York, I highly recommend this great show! What's your favorite musical, or your top five favorites? I don't think I can pick one favorite musical - but I can pick my top 5. They are, in no particular order:

Rosanne Cash

Rosanne Cash put on another stellar performance at the Uptown Theatre in Napa, CA last night! After recovering from recent brain surgery, Rosanne is again touring and promoting her recently penned memoir, Composed. With more than thirty years in the industry, Cash proves she is still relevant, performing mostly songs from her current release, The List, and Black Cadillac. Other songs came from Rules of Travel and The Wheel and a song she has not recorded, Tallahassee Bridge (my best guess at the song title). Cash avoids the "greatest hits" package many performers would fall into after such a long career, keeping her show fresh and packed with songs that have meaning in her life and career. In fact, she only performed two of her hits, Seven Year Ache and Tennessee Flat Top Box. This is the third time I have seen her perform live, and the show has never once been a repeat of the previous show, which some performers can easily fall into (see Bernadette Peters 2008 and 2009). During Radio Operator, a song about her father in the war, her face lit up the stage and her smile practically embraced the audience. Her voice was haunting during Girl from the North Country, heartbreaking as she sang Patsy Cline's She's Got You and just pure pleasure during one of my favorites, Sea of Heartbreak.

After the show Miss Cash greeted audience members and signed copies of her book, cd's, and other treasures fans brought, including a guitar. She graciously posed for photographs, shook hands and told me she loved my name!

The Uptown Theatre is a great venue, our 4th row center seats were amazing. The art deco theatre is charming and warm. The last two times I've seen Rosanne Cash haver been in Napa, first at the Opera House and now at the Uptown. I look forward to our next wine country get together.

There should be a pre-screening test before people can buy theatre tickets. One or two complete morons should not be allowed to ruin the experience for other people. Case in point: yesterday I took a friend of mine to see Wicked, this was a special surprise and was supposed to be a special day for her. She was able to block it out better than I was, I on the other hand, was about ready to explode. These two stupid, idiotic, rude bitches in front of us made the entire experience downright miserable for me. The worst viewing experience I have ever had in a theatre. They found a way to be annoying on not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR levels! FOUR! The only reason I didn't make a complete scene is because I worked there for 3 1/2 years. I did tell them to be quiet, but that only took care of two of the problems. First annoyance: They kept talking to each other, in regular voices, they weren't even whispering. Second annoyance: the hamburger and french fries the woman kept digging for in her purse. NOT ALLOWED in a theatre. This isn't a movie theatre, this is a friggin' live theatre! Third annoyance: one of the women was not blind, but needed the descriptive device to aid her, okay, that's fine, but keep it at a level JUST FOR YOU!! The entire show I heard "Glinda exits" and blah blah blah. Fourth annoyance: These two very large black women acted like they were in a Southern Baptist Church. Throughout the entire show they kept commenting, amen-ing, oh girl-ing, no she didn't-ing, in loud voices, like anyone in a ten row radius gave a damn what these two annoying bitches thought. All I can say is I hate them so much, and I let them know that they were making the entire experience miserable. Of course, they didn't care, but at least I said something. I also reported them for the food and that was put a stop to.

December 19, 2009. I can't believe I'm seeing Cher in Las Vegas, in Rear Orchestra seats. The closest seats I've ever had to Cher. I've seen Cher 7 times before Las Vegas. I'll never forget the first time I saw her, August 1999 in Mt. View California, it was a dream come true! I saw the "Do You Believe" Tour 3 times and the never ending "Farewell Tour" four times. Both tours were fantastic, giving the audience just what we wanted, needed and expected! Compared to Cher's Vegas act, those tours were just a warm up. Any production can be bigger and better when it's planted rather than on the move, and Cher does not disappoint. Even her opening number which hasn't changed in the last ten years takes on a new spin as Cher comes in from the side, still singing U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", breathing fresh life into her entrance with a Vegas worthy outfit and dangling over the audience, giving us all a close up view before the "death trap" as she refers to it, moves back and Cher walks out on stage. I am pleased to say, the Vegas show was not a rehash of the same material from the tours. Of course, some of the songs are done again, in a fresh new way. Cher brings out a giant closet which she comes in and out of for different songs, stating every time she steps out of the closet, she's younger. Included in the "closet" segment are "Dark Lady", "Gypies, Tramps and Thieves", "All I Really Want To Do", "Half Breed" and "Dark Lady". The videos shown are new and never before seen, Sonny is of course included and Cher sings a duet with a video of Sonny, there's a conversation with alter ego Laverne, who determines she can do a better opening number than Cher - so while the set and Cher change, we see Laverne's opening number. The set opens to a 50's street scene with Cher singing "Fire Down Below", then entering a car and emerging from another car singing "Old Time Rock n Roll". As part of her 70's performance she sings part of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" before breaking into "Take Me Home". The dance numbers in between costume changes (a different outfit for every song) were fantastic, even better than the tours. My favorite ones were during the closet segments, especially "Half Breed" where the guys were dressed as Indians, and "Dark Lady"/"Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" where the guys were dressed as...well you guessed it. The closet even turned into a Gypsy cart for this number. My favorite number by far was when Cher rose from the floor and stepped out of a giant ball type thing singing "Love Hurts". This is one of my favorite Cher songs, and she gave me goosebumps hearing it live. "Believe", the standard closing for Cher was a big ol "circus" event as usual, only, bigger and better. The only downfall to the show is that it couldn't go on for 3 or 4 hours!

Today something happened on BART that happens as often as Halley's Comet make an appearance: I had a conversation with someone! The 5:01 train was unusually crowded, and as I sat next to a lady who actually smiles, I commented, "The train is really crowded this evening." Her response, well first let me tell you my thoughts. I look at commuting as a complete waste of my time and money. I could do a lot more my two hours and $200 plus dollars a month. I used to walk or roller blade to work in minutes...free of charge and lived a more interesting life with more personal time.
Her response, "Yes it is. I'm just so happy to have an hour of alone time." Alone time? If you know me, you know I find a great deal of BART passengers completely annoying! They're either listening to their headphones too loud, I guess they don't get the concept of headphones!, talking too loud on the telephones sharing too much information with the entire car, typing too loud, breathing on me, gross!, or taking the entire seat, smashing me up against the window. I find it anything but enjoyable. She then explained that it's the only time she gets to herself to read and sit down. Once home, she has to cook, clean and "deal with teenagers". I suggested she ride around on BART a little longer. We both laughed. She went back to her book and I went back to longing for my walking days.

I went online to search for entertainment while I'm up in Tahoe. Harvey's, Montbleu, Harrah's, and came across at the South Shore Room (at Harrah's) called Abbacadabra. An ABBA tribute band. Okay, so I knew the songs would be fun and the price was so right, so how bad could it be? The show started and I knew it was going to be a good show. As the show progressed, it was becoming a great show. Half way through the "concert", it was evident that this was the second coming of ABBA. If I had taken out my contact lenses and forgotten that ABBA no longer performed, I could have sworn I was at an ABBA concert. The vocals, the costumes, the energy this group puts out it just fantastic. If you're an ABBA fan, this is a must see "concert" performance!

I was in Los Angeles over the weekend and had a pre-show snack and cocktail over at the Hollywood and Highland Mall in Hollywood. We ended up in uWink, because it looked interesting. The restaurant was clean, not crowded and with our 45 minute time limit, seemed like a good bet. uWink proved to be a good choice. I ordered the Bacardi Razberri Mojito for my drink. The drink was small, but packed a punch. I could taste the alcohol. Many places put more filler than actual alcohol content. I would recommend a cocktail at uWink. For my snack I ordered the hummus platter. The platter came with an assortment of carrot sticks, broccoli, cucumber slices and pita bread, grilled to perfection. There was even enough pita for dipping and enough left over to spoon out and eat. That never happens. Usually you're left with too many "dippers" and not enough "dip". Not the case at uWink. The service was great - we were immediately greeted and seated, our food and drinks came quickly after they were ordered and our "server" for lack of a better term, came to the table right away and explained how uWink works. That's where it gets a little odd. uWink definitely does not promote socializing. Right in the center of the table is monstrous screen where you place your orders and can then play games. The screen takes up a very large portion of the table, making sharing food items extremely difficult, the order screen and variety of games found on promotes anti-socialism. If the screen were pushed down into the table so you could easily see and communicate (and share!) with the person you're with, it would be great. I will say, the layout did keep the two tables full of children quiet. When we were being seated and I saw hoards of children around us, I expected the typical unpleasant dining experience, parents who won't control their children, running, screaming, food everywhere, you know the disasters I'm talking about. Not the case, in fact, except for the music playing (I recall "My Humps" from the Black Eyed Peas), the place was very quiet because everyone nobody was talking to anyone - they were all focused on their touch screens. As an adult wanting to socialize with my companions, I did not like the touch screen factor. As an adult wanting to dine without unruly children about, I loved it!

I overheard someone talking the other day, she said she had not time to teach her daughter how to cook or to spend time with her during the summer, so it's best to put her into camps all summer long. How sad that is. There was a time when mother's passed on generations of family recipes to their daughters and father's spent time with their sons. Today we live in an age where we can be reached 24/7, where were paid less than ever and expected to work more than ever. Our country has no idea what matters, and though of us who do know, are forced into doing otherwise. More important than that report that really means nothing in the end, that needs done every month or every week anyhow, is the memory that son or daughter is going to have for the rest of his or her life. That memory can just as easily be of what you didn't do with them. I'm one of those few people that think other people are more important than the job. I mean really, experience has taught me no matter how much time you devote to the job, you get laid off without a bat of an eye, someone less deserving gets the promotion. Is giving up your one shot in life really worth it? Sadly, I believe most Americans have taken that route - otherwise, this wouldn't be the scenario today.

It was a marketing campaign so you would spend more and a cruel joke on mankind. Please, please, please ladies, do you know how miserable you make everyone around you with your stench? How can you not notice the masses running from you. How can you not smell it? Oh, I guess you kill it with Aqua net.

Okay, it's time for me to sound off about this potential BART strike. I get you're not happy with the contract offer, but a strike is completely irresponsible. I haven't had a raise in two and a half years, in fact, my income has been on a steady decline and I have no medical insurance anymore...so I can't feel sorry for you. I especially can't feel sorry for you when you're planning on completely wrecking havoc in the Bay Area, making my life and tens of thousands of others a complete nightmare. Here in the USA where we all ready don't get enough sleep or time with friends and family, you're going to take that way from people with the traffic nightmare you're going to create. You're going to force people into 4, 5, 6 hour commutes, losing work pay all together, or causing an extreme financial hardship by forcing people to stay in hotels. You're going to separate families, forcing others to stay with friends. I'm mad as hell at you people because you're really going to F up my life. I need all the things you need too, but I can't just walk off the job and create havoc for all the other hard working, struggling people out there. HOW DARE YOU be so selfish. In fact, your trains have been delayed for me several times just in the past few days, you completely just didn't stop at my friends stop today and honestly, BART cars have disgusting and filthy. Have they EVER been cleaned? You keep raising your prices on me as my wages go down. I deserve to ride in a clean car. I deserve to not be packed in like a sardine, add a couple more cars during rush hour, for crying out loud. How dar you ruin months of planning for people with theatre tickets for birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions. Ya, people depend on transportation for a lot things. How dare you force me to breathe air that is all ready bad, making it worse with the thousands and thousands of extra cars that will be out everyday. I knew Carrie Fisher's one woman show 'Wishful Drinking' was going to be great, so my expectations for the night were set high. Not only did Fisher meet the bar, my bar that is, not the one out front serving the aptly named drinks, Darth Vodka (my favorite) and Princess Leia's Pleasure, she exceeded my expectations. Fisher opens the show mingling with the audience singing "Happy Days Are Here Again", casually tossing confetti at audience members, in some cases, even rubbing it into their bald heads. Later in the show she has confetti guns and shoots at the audience demanding answers to her questions. The set welcomes us into Fisher's "home", equipped with a couch, chair, and front door, a lawn gnome and an a huge apple. She wears slippers, walks around barefoot, drinks Coke zero and even dons her signature "cinnamon bun hair style". The highlight of the performance is when Fisher gives us an education on Hollywood Inbreeding 101 - complete with a board containing photos of Debbie Reynolds, Eddie Fisher, Mike Todd and Elizabeth Taylor. Fifteen minutes into the show, I knew I had to see again. By the end of the show, my stomach hurt and face ached from laughing. This is a piece of "must see" theatre! I suggest you a) comment so I know someone read this, and b) head to Berkeley Rep stat for this limited engagement before the show heads to Broadway.

Yes, Michael Jackson died, and yes it was a great loss to the music world. However, does an hour of Good Morning America need to be dedicated everyday to pure speculation about his death and his will? Do we need to hear daily what he paid in rent? Does every prime time news program have to run an hour special about MJ? Another person died that same day, whose death is being totally eclipsed by Jackson. Farrah Fawcett. I saw a small blurb on the news, after an interview with Lou Ferrigno about Jackson's workout routine, about her funeral. Today it's MJ's home movies. While she fought her horrible battle against anal cancer, yes, anal cancer, Farrah also started a fight for patien privacy rights. Even as her own life was on the decline, she fought for something that would help millions of Americans for generations to come. Why don't I hear about that everyday? This is one of my favorite places in the world. Perhaps my favorite place. I spent hours, usually in the early morning, before any of my friends were up, before the day officially started, reading, watching the birds and turtles. In the evening I would walk with friends, drink the water from a coconut. These photos are of the Dutch Windmill, where I did my reading, reflecting and contemplating. I would sit on a bench and think about life, my friends and how fortunate I was to be there, at that place at that moment.

Maybe I should call this Public Transportation Etiquette, but since I ride BART almost everyday, and that is my point of reference, this is what I'm sticking to. We all need to co-mingle in this world together, and we ride with thousands of stranger each week, at the very least, have some respect for one another!

If you are a "person of size" - don't stand in the middle of the stairway so nobody can get past you - I've missed trains before because of you. Also, I realize you have the right to be there as much as I do, but I also have the right not to be smashed up against the window for 45 minutes becuase you are taking up 80% of the space that I was all ready in.

If you are a group of 2 adults and ten kids....being slow....let someone else in. You don't need to take up both of the open stalls. Yes, I have missed a train because of you as well. First I can't get past you getting in and then you all hoard on the staircase down to the station, not letting anyone else pass. Thanks a lot.

Keep your personal business to yourself! Nobody needs to listen to you for 45 minutes talking to people you owe money to, telling them how your business is in trouble, and because of the economy you can't afford to pay them. Do you really want everyone on the train to know this? You must, considering how loud you were talking. If you don't want to call the person back everytime we go through a tunnel, dont' call on BART!!!!! What you referred to as 'this stupid train' is how you got to work. We al have financial problems, sister. None of our lives are what they used to be, but we don't advertise it on public transportation.

If you have to drink so much that half of you smells like a brewery, and you don't bathe, so the other half of you smells like a sewer...STAY OFF BART! None of us want you there.

Keep the fights with your boyfriend, girlfriend, drunk friend off the train. Take it someplace else.

You don't need to push or shove. We all get on at the same time. Oh, and to those of you getting on when others are getting off....don't stand in the middle of the friggin doorway blocking it! I mean come on idiots!!

We don't need to hear your music. You are wearing head phones for crying out loud. Does the volume really need to be turned up so everyone can hear it. How are you not getting a massive headache? I know I am. If you want to share your music with the world, become a friggin' dj.

Let's just all show some respect for eachother. It seems like a hard thing to do, but it's really not! Try it!

My Flight Celebrities

So, I never got around to listing all the celebrities I met during my short stint as a flight attendant. My first was Edward Burns, he has his own entry. I don't remember the exact order (there weren't that many!), but I think Giada was next, I didn't know who she was, but she has a cooking show on I think the Food Network. I'm going to look....okay, I guess she has a few shows, specials on the Food Network, Giada De Laurentiis. She sat in first class and was very cordial and easy - she didn't eat or want anything! My next three, all sat in the main cabin - not in first class!! Shocking!! On the very same flight, I had Sigourney Weaver and Kathy Najimy. Both were with their husbands (I'm only assuming Najimy's guy was her husband, could have been b/f), and both were very nice. They chatted with us, took photos with us and Kathy Najimy kept calling me honey and sweetie. Oh, on that same flight was a guy who used to be on 227 (remember that show!), and he's a stand up comedian, Barry Sobel, he was very nice too, he sat in the last row and we talked and joked the entire flight to JFK. My last celebrity on my last flight was Channon Roe. You may not know his name, but he's a guest star on everything! He stood in the back and chatted as well. I didn't have my camera, darn it!!

I've had a lot to say, but, a lack of internet connection at home to say it! It's finally up and working - although, only the phone line works in the kitchen, so, still somewhat limited. I've been taking notes on things I have to say, pop off about, or whatever. The new house is coming along slowly but surely. Got a lot done this weekend. It's becoming more "user friendly" . We had plenty of birds at the old house, but this house has more trees (not on a golf course), so we have even more birds. I woke up this morning to a choir of birds, I just laid in bed listening. In my opinion, birds singing is one of natures purest sounds.

Wow! I can see by reading some of my past blogs just how miserable I was doing that flight attendant job. I'm a social person, who has to have a social life and see my friends, which that job completely took away. Well, THANK GOD, that is all behind me now! Thanks to the help of a friend, I now have a normal M-F job again, I've been there a week. I'm working at an English Language school in San Francisco. I love working with foreign students. I love being back in the City, the buzz, the excitement, the friends!! I get to use my brain somewhat at the job, I'm working on multiple projects, meeting new people and I am getting to reconnect with my friends outside of work. I do have to say, as miserable as I was as a flight attendant, I met some great friends that I am so happy to have in my life. Onward and Upward and getting back on track.....

Be Kind to your Flight Attendant

I totally get why flight attendants can be bitchy. It all makes sense now. First of all, totally underpaid, so they are completely stressed out. Can't pay their bills, can't buy food, and need to drink more than ever, but can't afford alcohol. They never see their friends or family or pets. If they've worked at creating a garden for the past 3 years, it dies, because they aren't home to take care of it. You work more than ever, counting the time away. The time commitment is that of a full and part time job, at part time pay. If you work for an airline that has food, you spend your entire time delivering food and drinks, a sky waiter with no tips! Your feet and legs hurt from 7 hours of delivering food and drink non stop. You're hungry. So hungry, because you don't get a chance to eat and half the time you can't pee either. If you're considering being a flight attendant, DON'T DO IT! You will rue the day!!! I swear, you will regret it so much! And you can't just get out in this economy, good luck getting a job interview anywhere else. It sucks. It toally sucks. Does serving ginger ale and turkey wraps all day every friggin' day sound rewarding? NO!!! Then there's all the nights alone in a hotel room. In 4 months I've been able to venture out 4 times, because you get in too late to go anywhere and have to leave too early the next am or you're stuck at JFK which blows like you wouldn't believe. It takes an hour to get to Manhattan, and there's never time. There is $25 bad food though, but you can't afford it on this f*ing salary, so you just go hungry. Don't do it! Don't do it!!! The entire time that you're boarding, they aren't getting paid. Every problem you bring to to a flight attendant to deal with during that time, from loading your bags to your'e gonna vomit, absolutely no pay. It's mandatory volunteer time that you don't know about until you've taken the job. Also, when you're boarded on the plane and sit there for two hours bitching at the flight attendant for the delay, they're not getting paid to listen to you. Your flight attendant wants to get off the ground and get home as much as you do, even more, because they're forced working and listening to your mouth for free! FOR FREE! That has to be illegal, right?? So nest time you're on a plane, be nice to your flight attendant. He or she is hungry, lonely, broke and just wants to see their loved ones and friends and pay their bills again. Give 'em a smile and a break.
